More than 200 residents attended a drop-in session at the Jubilee Pavilion today to learn about plans to protect the future of the Cobb.
The event, organised by Dorset Coast Forum, gave members of the public the opportunity to view proposals aimed at safeguarding Lyme Regis’ historic harbour wall, which engineers say is facing serious structural risk.
Ongoing sea-floor erosion and constant wave pressure are weakening the foundations of the centuries-old breakwater. Without intervention, the structure could fail, putting the harbour, seafront and around 100 nearby properties at heightened risk of flooding.
Dorset Council project engineers Matthew Penny and Ian Fitz were present to explain the recommended solution, which includes installing a low-level toe concrete foundation and tension piles to anchor the inner harbour walls more securely.
Despite strong community support, the council has warned that there is currently a £4.1 million funding gap. In addition to securing funds, the project must also obtain the necessary planning consents before work can begin.
