Four artist-makers come together once again this autumn at The Malthouse Gallery, for In Our Element, a new exhibition celebrating the inspiration they find in the landscape and environment of West Dorset.
The exhibition features the latest work of artists Jools Woodhouse, Jillian Hunt, Alison Bowskill and Guy Woodhouse created over the past year, across a diverse range of media including wood sculpture, textiles, photography, printmaking, collage and painting. Through their different materials and creative processes, the four artists explore their connection with place and the natural world, creating work that reflects both the landscape they inhabit and the individual ways in which they experience it.
The artists each bring their own distinctive approach and perspective, but share a fascination with the world around them. The colours, textures, shapes and patterns of the Dorset landscape - from the grand and elemental to the tiny details that can so easily be overlooked - all provide a rich source of inspiration.
Jillian Hunt channels her creativity into abstract photography, blending it with her textile design expertise by having her images printed onto fabric which she then transforms into new creations through sewing.
Jools Woodhouse has recently been exploring the beauty of the Lyme coastline with all its shapes, colours and textures. Painting in a more expressive style in a new palette adding depth and texture to her work.
Alison Bowskill explores a variety of printmaking, processes and techniques, from Etching and Lithography to Lino cuts. The prints are an emotive response to locations and environments which capture the drama, life and mood of these places.
Guy Woodhouse is influenced by coastal landscapes and the erosive forces of weather and water, combining woodturning with carving and hand-finishing techniques to create tactile, organic forms.
The exhibition runs from Monday 2 until Thursday 12 November and is open daily from 10am until 5pm. Admission is free of charge.
