Replenish is a beautiful exhibition of arts and ceramics for the spring featuring 5 local artists who will bring a wonderful collaboration to the Malthouse space: Zee Jones, Lesley Hook, Caroline Barnes, Hester Singlewood and Linda Bristow
Hesta Singlewood
Hesta Singlewood is an artist and maker based on the Jurassic Coast in Devon. Originally trained in horticulture, the botanical world is often at the heart of her paintings. Hesta’s close connection to her surroundings is evident in each creation she puts out into the world, from her small folk art-style acrylic canvases, allotment skirts and enchanting woven nests, through to the pictures she posts on her Instagram account.
Zee Jones
Zee completed an art foundation course following redundancy and started painting in 2010. She is largely self taught but her style is influenced by her study of the 20th century modernists.
Specialising in semi abstract and collage, her work has been described as confident and strong with a compelling use of structure and colour. Based in Devon, Zee’s work is inspired by a love of the countryside and coastline which surround her.
Caroline Barnes
Caroline is based in West Dorset and specialises in creating an exquisite range of handmade porcelain products from buttons to framed collections.
Each piece is handmade from porcelain clay, glazed and then decorated using platinum and coloured decals created from Caroline’s illustrations and photographs. Inspired by vintage prints, botanical drawings and the beach finds from nearby Lyme Regis, Caroline has created a highly contemporary ceramic collection.
Lesley Hook
Lesley is a mixed media artist, building up layers of watercolours, acrylic paints and inks, collage, crayon and pastel, to create paintings full of colour and pattern, that reflect her love of textiles and her home which nestles in Devon’s green landscape, just a stone’s throw from the coastline.
Her paintings can be a blast of colour, inspired by nature while still allowing for the imagination to wander and create. Still-life paintings include a collection of vases and bowls, filled with flowers and fruit. She has developed her paintings with a splash of imagination and a nod to her love of tapestry, patchwork and embroidery.
Linda Bristow
Linda is a ceramicist whose work explores the diversity and fragility of meadows, and the profusion of flowers, grasses and herbs that live within. In order to capture this diversity each sculpture is hand formed and so each is unique.
Stems rustle, tall, spiky, prickly, short, thin, fragile, swaying, twisting, tangling. Delicate, soft fragrant flowers flourish in every colour, size, shape and scent conceivable. Names provoke the imagination even further….Hairy Sedge, Ladies Smock, Yellow Rattle, Sneezewort, Wild Angelica……….all reflect the fragile yet enduring aspect of our environment.
The exhibition runs from Saturday 9 March until Sunday 17 March and is open daily from 10:30am until 4:30pm. Entry is free of charge.
