Artist and printmaker Richard Kaye returns to Lyme Regis with his popular annual exhibition. This is a hugely varied exhibition including paintings, wooden reliefs, screen prints and drawings.
Richard was born in Coventry, later moving to Lyme Regis where he lived before going to Bournemouth to study art, focusing on fine art. Recently he has been fixated with painting and printmaking in particular, often focusing on somewhat unexpected subject matter. His most recent series of paintings are abstract landscapes of Exeter and Lyme Regis painted from memory, but from specific viewpoints and featuring iconic landmarks. He has also captured brutalist London buildings such as the Wellbeck Street NCP and the 2015 Squire and Partners M Hotel in Shoreditch. The paintings use a vivid and bright palette in order to capture the attention of the viewer, sometimes featuring harsh angular silhouettes of unexpected subject matter like scaffolding or architecture.
Composition is crucial to Richard and he ensures his images are both striking and bold, often surprising visitors who don’t expect to see this type of work in a seaside town in Dorset. The drypoint prints are all made in the traditional way, etching into the copper plate by hand using a scribe, and then printing with on intaglio press. The screen prints are also hand pulled in the same studio using the traditional technique.
The exhibition runs from Monday 11 August until Monday 25 August and is open daily from 10am until 5:30pm. Admission is free of charge.
