The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, could be seen from Lyme Regis on Friday night. Vibrant curtains of light seen in the night sky, ranging from green to pink and scarlet are caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Although faint to the human eye, the colours we far more visible when taking a photo on a camera or with a smart phone camera in night mode. An “extreme” geomagnetic storm caused the lights to be more visible on Friday evening meaning they could be seen as far south as Lyme Regis.
