Essential Repair Work Completed to The Cobb

Wednesday 17th June 2026

Urgent repair work to address a large void in the seaward base of The Cobb has been successfully completed, helping to protect Lyme Regis' most iconic landmark and important coastal defence structure.

Temporary protection measures were put in place in November using large rock-filled bags to reduce further erosion caused by winter storms. Over the past few days, a permanent repair solution has now been installed.

The work involved pumping fast-setting concrete into the void from a secure compound on the Cobb, providing vital structural support to the affected section of the historic harbour wall.

Adam Steele, Dorset Council Project Engineer, said:

"We are pleased to confirm that repair works to address voiding at the base of The Cobb in Lyme Regis have now been successfully completed.

Following a positive inspection during low tide on Sunday 14 June, the team progressed with the first phase of works on Monday 15 June. This phase involved careful preparation of the affected area and the installation of a concrete mattress bag. The bag was then filled with concrete, with all activities carried out efficiently within a limited tidal working window.

On Tuesday 16 June, once conditions allowed safe access, the team returned to site to remove installation equipment and complete final sealing works in the immediate area. The installed concrete mattress has now formed a secure seal and, most importantly, is providing essential structural support to what was previously a vulnerable section of the wall.

We are very encouraged by the outcome of these works and will continue to monitor the area as part of our ongoing asset management. Over the coming weeks, the repair is expected to gradually blend with its surroundings.

We would like to thank you all for your continued support and understanding while these essential works were carried out."

Cllr Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to repair this void, which can only be done at very low tide and with calm weather.

“People in Lyme Regis know just how important the Cobb is – it protects the harbour, supports local jobs and is a big part of the town’s identity.

“It has been a complex and carefully timed operation with our engineers having to work around tides, weather and in a very exposed spot. I want to thank everyone involved for getting it done safely.

“We also really appreciate the patience of residents, businesses and visitors while this work has been taking place. These are essential repairs that help us look after The Cobb for the future.”

The immediate objective of the project was to prevent further erosion and stabilise the historic harbour structure while longer-term protection plans are developed.

In April, Dorset Council approved £6.2 million in funding to help secure the long-term future of The Cobb, ensuring this historic and much-loved landmark can continue to protect the harbour and be enjoyed by future generations.

The successful completion of these repairs marks an important step in safeguarding Lyme Regis' historic waterfront while wider plans for its preservation move forward.
