Urgent Repairs to the Cobb

Thursday 6th November 2025

Ongoing sea-floor erosion and wave impact are undermining the base of the historic Cobb breakwater, threatening its long-term stability.

These urgent temporary measures are part of a plan to protect the Cobb long term. According to Dorset Council, 11 one-tonne rock bags have been positioned into place to partially fill a void and create a protective barrier at the toe of the structure. The bags are designed to absorb wave energy, helping to mitigate the impact of winter storms.

The long-term future of the Cobb is at significant risk. Its stability is dependent on the proposed Phase 5 Coastal Protection Scheme securing the required regulatory consents and full financial support. Currently, there is a £4.1 million funding shortfall for the planned stabilisation works. Without this investment, the Cobb could fail as a breakwater, endangering the harbour, the seafront, and approximately 100 nearby properties, which would be at increased risk of flooding and storm damage.

There is a public engagement event taking place Thurs 27 Nov in the Jubilee Pavilion on the seafront 12-6pm.

This event is an important opportunity for local residents, businesses, and visitors to learn more about the project and show their support for protecting the future of the Cobb and the Lyme Regis coastline.
