The Cobb is under threat - Help safeguard its future

Thursday 27th November 2025
12:00 - 18:00

The iconic Cobb in Lyme Regis is facing serious structural challenges. Ongoing sea-floor erosion and wave impact are undermining the base of the historic breakwater, threatening its long-term stability. Without urgent intervention, the Cobb could fail as a breakwater, putting the harbour, seafront, and around 100 nearby properties at risk of flooding.

While urgent repairs are planned, a major stabilisation project—including a proposed low-level concrete toe foundation and tension piles to anchor the inner harbour walls—has been delayed until at least April 2026 due to a £4.1 million funding shortfall alongside failure to secure necessary planning consents.

To keep the community informed, Dorset Coast Forum, on behalf of Dorset Council, will be hosting a public drop-in event to share updates on the Cobb Stabilisation Scheme.
The session will:

Explain why stabilisation work is urgently required
Outline the complexities and key organisations involved
Provide updates on the recently discovered void, its causes, repairs, and implications
Highlight other areas of the structure needing repair

This event is an important opportunity for local residents, businesses, and visitors to learn more about the project and show their support for protecting the future of the Cobb and the Lyme Regis coastline.
Your support matters — together, we can help safeguard this vital piece of Dorset’s coastal heritage.
