Morgan's Grave

This site at the junction between Clappentail Lane and Sidmouth Road has been known as Morgan's Grave for over 250 years.

Morgan was most likely a suicide, traditionally buried at a crossroads outside consecrated ground according to the law of the time. After widespread public outcry, the practice was abolished by the Burial of Suicide Act in 1823.

Local legend has also portrayed Morgan variously as a highwayman, a deserting soldier and a sheep thief.

A plaque at the site was unveiled by members of the Lyme Regis Society and town mayor Barbara Austin in 2004.
