Lyme Regis District Parkinson's Support Group

Community

People living in and around Lyme Regis who have recently been diagnosed with and / or have a connection to Parkinson’s are able to join a local group to meet, socialise and get together with other people living with the condition.

Parkinson’s is the world’s fastest growing neurological condition and around 145,000 people in the UK have Parkinson’s. Every hour, 2 more people are diagnosed and it’s estimated that nearly 1800 people in East Devon and West Dorset are living with Parkinson’s today.

The group aims to encourage anyone from Lyme Regis, Axminster, Charmouth or Seaton living with the condition to come along and share anecdotes, ideas and wisdom in an informal, comfortable and friendly environment. There will be guest speakers, occasional informative events and refreshments for all.

Stephanie Colston, who was herself diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2018, is behind the initiative, saying: “Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s was a huge shock. It has taken some time for me to come to terms with it and its impact on my life. Everyone’s experience is different but what I have learnt is that meeting other people within the Parkinson’s community is both reassuring and helpful. There is only limited access to professional support in the Lyme area so I hope that providing the space and opportunity for people living with Parkinson’s to meet informally on a regular basis will have a positive impact on their lives and experience of the condition.”

The group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, 2-3.30pm at Lyme Regis Powerboat Club.

A private Facebook Group has been set up and anyone interested in receiving more details should request an invitation to join the group by searching Facebook for ’Lyme Regis District Parkinsons Support Group’ or email lymepdhelp@gmail.com.
