Victoria Pier

Point of interest

Victoria Pier forms part of the eastern section of the Cobb and is used by the working fishing and tripping boats and pleasure craft because it is the deepest part of the harbour. The wall was originally dry-built and a small section of this kind of walling remains in the east face of the Victoria Pier. Victoria Pier sits low in the water enabling its use as a paddle steamer quay. It is usually submerged at spring high water, allowing the waves to break on and over the structure.

Originally known as Crab Head, this section of the Cobb was the end of the landing quay, finishing at the fisherman's shelters beyond the buildings. It was extended by 100 feet between 1841-42 and renamed Victoria Pier most likely in honour of Princess Victoria before her ascension to the throne. The pier was extended a further 40 feet in 1848.
