The River Lym (sometimes referred to as river Lim) flows through the town before it gently cascades into the sea. You can follow a path from the Town Mill along the river for a pleasant walk towards Uplyme on the East Devon Way.

From where it rises at Raymond’s Hill in East Devon, the river flows approximately 3.1 miles before it passes under Buddle Bridge, adjacent to the Rock Point Inn in Lyme Regis and into the English Channel. The river falls over 200 metres from its source.

Lym or Lim?

There’s debate as to whether it should be known as the River Lym (as with Lyme Regis) or River Lim. Signs, maps and some documents refer to it being the River Lim while other documents and many local people believe, it should be the River Lym.

Town Mill

There has been a mill on the river for over 700 years, with the site having an entry in the Domesday Book. When you visit the Town Mill you will learn about the history of grain and milling with a demonstration by one of the millers, as well as viewing the working waterwheel. Entry is free with donations encouraged.
