Lyme Regis Commemorates 80th Anniversary of VJ Day

Saturday 16th August 2025

A moving drumhead service was held on the seafront last night to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.

Representatives of the Powder Monkeys Explorer Sea Scout Unit, alongside Jon Hunt, standard bearer for the Lyme Regis branch of the Royal British Legion, and John Bird, standard bearer for Lyme Regis RNLI, constructed the drumhead altar. The ceremony was accompanied by stirring music from Lyme Regis Town Band.

The service included a heartfelt speech from Mike Tappin, who reflected on his grandfather’s involvement in the war and the significance of VJ Day in bringing peace after years of conflict.

The evening provided a poignant moment of remembrance for those who served and sacrificed, as the community gathered together to honour their legacy.
